Summer Holidays and Healthy Air: Keeping Your Home Fresh While the Kids Are Home

25 July 2025

As the school year winds down and the long-awaited summer holidays begin, many families look forward to the joy and chaos of having the children at home. From arts and crafts to indoor games, and the constant parade of snacks and sleepovers, it’s a busy and exciting time. But with the added hustle and bustle, there’s another factor parents need to consider – indoor air quality.

When children are home all day, the house becomes a hub of activity. Doors and windows are opened more frequently, bringing in pollen and outdoor pollutants. Shoes track in dust and allergens, and with more time spent indoors, germs can spread more easily. All of this can contribute to poor indoor air quality, a concern especially important for children, who breathe more air relative to their body weight than adults and are more susceptible to pollutants.

Poor indoor air quality isn’t always obvious. It can show up as fatigue, allergy symptoms, headaches, or even an uptick in summer colds and sniffles. With kids playing, cooking happening more often, and even pets joining in the fun, indoor air can quickly become a mix of dust, pet dander, odours, and airborne germs.

This is where an air purifier becomes more than just a luxury, it’s a smart, proactive choice for maintaining a healthier home environment. Air purifiers can trap up to 99.97% of airborne particles, including dust, pollen, mould spores, and even bacteria and viruses. They can also help remove odours from food, pets, and the summer air.

Using an air purifier can help reduce the risk of sickness spreading in the home. Kids often catch summer colds, especially when they’re around other children during playdates or camp. Air purifiers can help remove airborne germs, reducing the chances of those viruses circulating through the house.

In addition, air purifiers can be particularly beneficial for children with asthma or allergies. With the increase in indoor allergens during the summer, especially if you’re using fans or air conditioning that might stir up dust, clean air can make a big difference in comfort and health.

Of course, an air purifier works best as part of an overall healthy home strategy. Encourage kids to wash their hands regularly, take shoes off at the door, and help with simple cleaning tasks to keep dust and clutter under control. Ventilate the house early in the morning when outdoor air quality tends to be better, and vacuum regularly using a HEPA filter vacuum.

This summer, while the kids enjoy their well-deserved break from school, take a moment to ensure the air they’re breathing at home is as clean and healthy as possible. A small investment in air purification can go a long way toward a summer filled with laughter, learning, and fewer sick days – exactly what every family needs.
